I am cleaning up my rocker shaft getting ready for my head to be returned from the shop. I have a question regarding the orientation of the shaft. The shaft has oil holes that look like they line up with grooves cut in the rocker for oil distribution. My IT manual says that they should be installed the opposite way with the oil holes deadheading into the machined surface on the opposite side. This is also the way I found the shaft when disassembled. This does not make sense. Why drill oil holes only to have them deadhead, and why mill grooves to carry oil to the high load point, but not have oil delivered to this groove? Perhaps someone can enlighten me before I install it backward... Thanks in Advance, Aaron

Aaron, I ran into the exact same problem when I overhauled my 65. I remember when I put it back together I turned the rocker shaft 180 degrees from the way it was when I took it apart. I also remember the rocker arms having alot of wear on the end that was above the valve. I had to reshape the rounded surface of the rocker arm where it fits into that hardened cup that sits on top of the valve.

It has been at least eight years since I did that overhaul. I can"t remember if my service manual from Massey told how to orient the shaft, but now you have me wondering if I put mine together wrong. I will look in my service manual tomorrow ( I don"t have it handy now) and see what I can find out.

Thanks for the reply. I have yet to reassemble the engine, but I have reassembled the shaft. I rotated it 180 to line it up with the oil delivery grooves and placed a new wear surface in the primary wear area.

My book says to place the oil delivery holes on the valve side, but I cannot see how this can properly deliver oil. I may have to change it later but for now....

Aaron,
I got a chance to look in my service manuals today. My IT manual says on page 12, paragraph 29, "Oil holes in rocker arm shaft face toward valve spring."

My service manual that I bought from Massey says, "Direction of oil holes in shaft.....Toward push rods."

I can't remember which way I assembled mine, but I know I put it together so the oil holes were lined up with the oil groves in the rocker arms. If I remember correctly the Massey manual was right and the IT manual was wrong.

Thanks, it is the only thing that made sense. Mine was assembled per the IT manual by the last owner.

Where was it located in the Massey manual? I am going to look again as I tend to miss a lot.

Thanks for the information. Aaron

I know you ain't gonna believe this, but my book says the same thing! Just gotta know where to look, I guess. I spoke to my machinist and he did not know about this either. Not sure what manual he was using, but hopefully we someone will get the word out before more engines are assembled wrong. Thanks for the information. Now to get building! Aaron
