Anyone Losing Your Small MF Dealers?

Took a little ride today with the family and happened by our MF dealer, some 30ish miles away and it appeared that they no longer handle MF tractors!

Don"t know if this is true, but I seem to recall reading a few months ago that Agco was going to eliminate smaller dealers in favor of larger ones. I could be wrong on this one.

This dealer I am speaking of kept an inventory of parts and would order and ship parts to me to keep my MF-50 going. Plans were, at some point in the future to buy a new MF from these guys. Great customer service and a great product - apparently gone.

How"s your small, full service MF dealer doing?

Thanks,
Bill

Dealers are disappearing in the smaller towns, In the larger towns and cities the one dealer may handle many differant makes. This has also been the case with cars.

We've gone just the opposite way. OUr local Massey dealer has gone more to Fendts, but they are still AGCO and they still sell Massey's, but many other product lines as well. Then my favorite Oliver/White dealer about 1/2 hr away recently became a Massey dealer as well. Massey is still going strong in our area, but there's a dealer for every color within 1/2 hr of our farm. Massey and IH are closest, but the IH dealer went more to lawn & lanscape over big farm equipment.

They'er disappearing around here too. That's a bad deal, since we have all MF stuff.

We now have to drive about 30 miles to find a dealer.

Hey Boss,
Imagine running into you on an MF message board! Nice to see a familiar "face"

Happenin' here too. It's not just MF dealers. All brands are circling the wagons. There's also getting to be a lot of small-time dealers handling imports.

We had what you would describe as a big Massey dealer here since the Ferguson days. They shut the doors for good about 2 years ago. Another long-time dealer that's south of me is slowly switching to Montana tractors. I don't give them long. Dealer north of me by about 60 miles is doing well. (Long time family business with younger generation VERY active. Looks good for them) East of here is another long time, very successful dealer, just a bit too far to travel unless there's no alternative. (About 50 miles in a straight line, but 2-1/2 hours each way by hiway)

Hi,
You aren't on your own loosing small MF dealers, it's happening on this side of the pond as well.
Don't think that I'd want to be in that position these days! No make is safe.

We used to have a real good MF dealer here. New owners took it over and tried to get into more lines of equipment instead of concentrating on the MF business that was good. The old service manager stayed as a mechanic only and some new guy was the service manager. He didn't have a clue! My tractor was in to get front and rear seals and some other minor things. This new guy kept telling me it's OK for the top link attach. to flop all over the place. The old mechanic told me to tighten the nut on the spring just to take the slack out. This made a lot more sense. The original saw the light and went to another dealer. They do very well with MF and also sell New Holland. They said the smaller MF was better than the New Holland. Also said MF wins a lot of awards for new technology in tractors in Europe. Dave

My "local" MF dealer sold out and quit about 15 years ago. Rumor was that he figured out he made more money selling out than staying in business. Now its 40+ miles to dealers that prefer other brands or believe parts are made of solid gold.

The local Massey dealer is doing pretty well but I was there the other day and was talking with one of the factory reps that covers this area and he said that the sales in this area were down about 25 percent from 2004. He also said that they were going to lose 2 dealers and maybe 4 from this area. I wonder if some of the quality problems that they have had with the 400 series is coming back to haunt them. Two of the local Deere dealers have almost new 400 series that people have traded in.

What's going on with the 400 series in terms of quality? Though I liked the 200 series tractors, before they shut down Coventry, I thought the 400 series were pretty much the same machine with a new front grill. I noticed on the MF web site they are launching a 500 series, which look like the 400 series machines with a different number on the hood!

From what the service manager of the local Massey dealer told me the 400 series had some changes and most of these changes were not good, most of them were made to cheapen things up. Another problem that they had is the quality control in the Brazil plant has been very bad. I purchased a 451 and the castings were not cleaned well and the hydraulic scren was stopped up at 13 hours with casting flash and grit! They changed the filter and fluid and it was plugged up again at 35 hours. It also would jump out of low range. It is currently on the local John Deere lot. I traded for a 5203 John Deere and love it! The Deere dealer also has another almost new Massey on his lot.
