Finally decided it was time to fix PTO leak. The shaft has a groove worn where the seal rides and there is some light scoring. My thinking is I should go ahead and replace the shaft.

After checking multiple sources I'm finding two different prices on shafts, one is around $60 and the other is around $90 (one competitor site has both shafts). Both shafts are replacements for the MF part number 181204M92. I'm told they are from two different suppliers. I have two questions. First, does anyone know who the two suppliers might be? And two, any ideas on why one shaft costs 50% more than the other? I have no problem with paying more if there's a good reason.

All done. Speedie-Sleeve is on and new seal is in place. For anyone interested in using a sleeve an empty caulk tube is a very decent tool for tapping the 1.75" diameter sleeve into place.

Try Chicago Rawhide Speedie Seals

Just to add a little extra on all other comments which are all 100% spot on....the difference in prices are probably one is genuine MF....the other is from what we call in the UK a "spurious supplier"...the title "speedy sleeve" is well known here as well....a favourite for fitting to 300 series front axle 4wheel drive shafts when they become very deeply grooved...Don't even consoder heating them as the will go out of shape...gently tap them on using a piece of good fitting tube...hope all goes well....Geoff..Scotland...UK

Hi,
Before you buy whichever shaft check out the possibility of a Shaft Repair Kit with your bearing supplier. These are an ultra-thin steel sleeve that is pushed on over the worn area of the shaft. The seal will accommodate the minute increase in diameter.

In the very large number of posts I have read on this subject I have seen a few references to sleeves for other PTO shafts but never a mention of them for the MF35 PTO shaft. My understanding is that the sleeves are heated and fitted to the shaft while hot. Have never seen them for sale anywhere.

Guys here call them a speedy sleeve(might be a brand name). They are ordered from an auto parts or possibly Industrial supplier. You will need to know original diameter of shaft to get the right one. Pretty sure they aren't expensive and you could ask about heating.

I'm liking the idea of a speedy sleeve, and have located an auto parts store that knows what they are and either has the proper size or can get it. Seems like a tested and trusted solution.

Thanks for the feedback
