I am doing a totally rebuild on my mf 40.
The tractor being a mf 203 diesel.
I would like to know what type of oil is used in the 7 inch disc brakes and also the type gear oil
used in the plantery final drive axles.

With the 203 engine it would be a 40B. I find that MF oil works better than aftermarket oil in the trans. Perma-tran III is probably what it uses but you should check since there was 2 transmissions offered. Dave

Albert if your "40" has a 4 cyl diesel engine and wet brakes Then it most likely is a MF40B. There was an earlier MF40 but it had a 3cyl engine and dry brakes. Oil for the brakes is supplied from trans/rear axle. Your transmission and gear and hydraulic oils should be TDH. You will need to check the oil specification required if you have the Instant Reverse or Powershuttle trans. The TDH hay also meet that spec. This type of oil is commonly available at you auto parts stores and also WalMart just be sure to check the label to see that it meets the MF spec for your tractor. I use the same oil for trans in my 135 and 40, powersteering, back hoe/loader and the hydrostat in my JD318's and JD430 it sure makes it a lot easier then buying a separate oil for each application.
