engine misses when throttle is advanced

I have an MF 135 with a Perkins 3 cylinder, it has a zenith carb. It misses and backfires when the throttle is advanced. There appears to be a solenoid where the high speed needle adjustment would be. Is this the cause of the problem? What should the voltage be to the coil? I can not find any information in the I&T manual.
Thank you, Bill

Could be the main mixture is a bit lean which can be adjusted with a tiny screw at the outer end of that solenoid. Or it could be running lean because the float level is too low, or the gas level in the float bowl is low because of restriction in the fuel line, starting with the screen in the tank and all possible components in the fuel including the screen on the back of the inlet adapter and a sticking float needle thats not opening all the way. Could be one really bad restriction or a gaggle of little ones.

The solenoid should have 12 volts at all times the engine has ignition power. Its there to stop dieseling when shutting down a hot engine.

Gerald,
Thank you for the reply, now I know what the solenoid is for. I checked the voltage today with only the key on and didn't get any voltage. I will trace back to find were I am loosing the voltage, before I start adjusting things.
Thank you, Bill
