MF 235 starting problem

I would like to help my neighbor fix his MF 235 (or 245, not sure). The starter switch will not engage the starter, but if you jump the switch at the solenoid, it engages and starts fine. I feel like the starter switch is bad or there is an open wire in the starter switch circuit. He mentioned that he thought it had a Neutral switch. If it does have a Neutral switch, I would think it is in series with the start switch to keep it from starting in gear. Does anyone know if this tractor has a Neutral switch?

This old tractor has it's share of "cobbling", so I suspect a bad wire, but I don't want to bypass a safety feature like a Neutral switch if it has one.

Any advice is appreciated before I get out the ohm meter.

Sometimes just pushing or giggling the rubber boot on the safety switch will work. I've got hydraulic hoses for the loader that go past the safety switch and bumped it loose. Good thing I knew about it or I'd have been stumped why the key didn't work. Don't wire the safety switch so it isn't needed. I've seen one that was and started in gear by someone standing beside it. Luckily they got the stop lever pulled right away. The safety switch only works for the high, low range shifter. The middle position is marked "S" for start. Dave

I have a 1979 MF 245, it had electrical issues since it was new.. It would do the same thing, key start would not work, but you could jump the solenoid and start it.. The neutral switch was fine. Put a new starter solenoid in it, it would be OK for a few months, then the same thing would happen. Over the years, it has had at least a dozen new solenoids put in it. Several years ago, on the advice of some of the fine people here.. I went through the entire electrical system, pulling all the spade connectors, spraying them with contact cleaner, aqueezing them tight, etc. I paid particular attention to the main cables.. making sure the ground was a clean tight connection. The tractor has not caused one problem sinse then, except for a flat tire.. LOL

Vinnie, as fer as I know it does have a Neutral saftey switch. It should be about 10 inches in front of the L-S-H shifter. Has two wires going to it, they are probably not making good connection. Wire connections are hidden by a rubber boot. If -cobbled- then someone *may* have straight-wired it. Once you get the circuit complete you shouldn"t have that problem. The switch may also be bad, < $20 or so at a dealer. Don"t be in a hurry to by-pass it, it"s there for a good reason, SAFETY!
