My tachometer does not work on my MF 135 diesel. There may be a gear or something miss were the cable goes to the engine. Are they a gear in there and what is the parts # on it. Thanks Archie

Did you do any other test to spin the tachometer or check to see if the ends of the cable are still square?

Check the cable first. They aren't too expensive. I changed the cable a couple of times on mine but the tach. itself had gone bad. I took it to a place that fixes them and they said it was OK. It worked but it showed a lower speed than it should have. I ended up getting a new one from an MF dealer. It reads properly but the road speeds are off a little because the muti-power tachs were discontinued. Dave

According to my parts book, there is a coupling on the back of the camshaft that couples the tachometer cable to the camshaft.

In my experience with a gas 135 (Continental) the cable core itself is the most liklely suspect. The square end has rounded off or the cable has twisted off. Its standard speedometer cable so a universal speedometer cable core fixed it for me. With so many cars using electronic drives for the speedometer that universal kit may be harder to find.

It could be the coupling, could be the tachometer. You can check the tachometer with a suitable nail chucked in an electric drill. Run it in reverse the tachometer will indicate twice the drill speed. You can check the cable while you have the housing loose from the tachometer. The tachometer end of the cable shouldn't turn unless the engine is running and you shouldn't be able to turn it by hand or with pliers.

Is your tach cable broken?
