Got her running tonight. Carries 40 psi of oil pressure at idle. Only things not machined or replaced was the timing gears, cam, lifters, pushrods, and rockers. All else new. 9.1-9.2 compression. Wish I could get all these pesky coolant leaks to stop. I failed to use sealant and mounted all gaskets dry. Wishing I had not done that now, as I will likely have to remove everything and reseal.

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron

When I changed my water pump and thermostat, I used sealant on both sides of all gaskets, and had absoutley no leaks. Your best bet is to remove, clean, apply sealant and reassemble. I would not use any type of "snake oil" stop leak products for this. Tom

if the surfaces looked good and square without corrosion, I would have put the gaskets in dry too

if they look warped at all or corroded and cannot be replaced, thats what they make the blue stuff for

in the good old days, permatex was all you used, #1 soft for stuff you might have to take apart, #2 hardening for stuff that was never ever maybe coming apart this side of the junkyard

It's always a comfort to here that first cylinder fire off. You know at least that all the major problems are behind you. Feels good to bring one back to life. It's been fun watching your progress so far.

Let's see, You've got the tractor running, you're a bit the wiser now than when you started, and spring is only a couple months away! Sounds like a reason to celebrate!

I hope you have a wonderful summer of tractorin' around on that 65.

Use it for 4 or 5 hours, and let it cool off. The cooland leaks might stop. Sometimes when gaskets are installed dry, they seal better once they've been heated up.

I hope you are right. The water pump housing to head and the water pump itself are seeping coolant. I have heated it up to 160, then let it cool to 100, then brught it up to 160 again. I put the gaskets in place dry and did not attempt to start the engine til 2 months later. It has been quite cold during this time. The thermostat housing was a real trick, too. The distrib turns opposite from convention as well. It almost ran with 3 and 2 crossed. Almost. Today, I will try to set the timing and valves. My balancer is wobbly as well. Hope I dont't have to pull the front end to correct, but it may be necessary. More to follow.

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron
