question . 6-354 perkins unusual problem the engine seems to get lazy longer it runs .it dosent seem to run to full rated rpm and power is lazier than should be . then if you let it idle for a few minutes it runs alot better ? i think it is problem with injection pump ? anyway it also seems to have a puffy miss in exhaust when it runs poorly but if you let idle for couple minutes power and smoothness returns . anyway has new injectors ect and engine is decent condition also read somewhere that these perkins 354 timing gears wear a bit and injection timing retards ? anyway looking fo some opinions ????? any responces appreciated !!!

I had a problem with my 1135 massey with a 354 perkins. I replaced the filters and cleaned the lift pump screen and it did not help. I called the local diesel shop about checking the injector pump and he suggested checking for air leaks in supply lines. After replaceing severallines and seals he suggested checking the pickup tube in the tank because they had problems with them before. I filled the tank all the way up and it ran fine for a while until the fuel ran low. I drained the tanks and found a strainer at the end of the pickup tube. It is under the drain plug in the tank. It was full of dirt. Put it back in and put some fuel in and it ran a while and started running rough and loosing power. I could bled the air from the pump and it ran alright for a while but would start missing and loosing power. I drained the tank again and checked the tube this time and it had a rust hole about 2/3 of the way up. I ran a new supply fromthe tank to the lift pump and it solved the problem. About 2 weeks wasted changing filters and lines but got it running ok.

"There is also a chance the screen on the has rusted..."

I think that Ferrel meant: screen on the LIFT PUMP. I have had that right full of crud before causing similar symptoms. Pop the top off of the lift pump and clean that screen.

Had the same thing happen to our 590, with 248 engine, the problem was caused by a worn lift pump, and filters that werent as clean as they should be.

Don't let the talk of fungus and gunk scare you. Change the filters first, then if it still does it then you can worry some about it. Chances are the filters are just clogged.

We've got an Oliver 1855 I put a new filter on right away when we bought it a few years ago, then within about 100 hours it was doing the same thing you describe. New filter again and it's fine.

Over the I, have found that a stringey fungis grows in the bottom of diesel fuel tanks. This can slow or stop the fuel from flowing . I,have also all kinds of stuff in fuel tanks ,for any problem like these I,remove the fuel shut off valves . There is also a chance the screen on the has rusted and feel in restricting the flow of fuel.

Hi Chris,

Looks like low fuel supply to the injection pump
and/or some water in the fuel. When was last time
the fuel filters maintenance was done ?.

The primary fuel pump may be tired...
check if the engine oil level is overfull

One neighbour had similar problem few years ago
after few checks we found that the fuel valve
under the tank was almost closed (kids ???).

My 2¢

Agreed with everyone, check the fuel line right through from the tank. Wash the tank as well to remove any water and debris that might be inside. Check the breather on the tank. Check the filters and lift pump.Check all pipelines. Sounds very much like you have water, debris or possibly air in the system.
