Alternator Conversion

Have a Massey Harris 44 that I trying to convert to an alternator. It was converted to 12 volts some years back with a generator. Should be quite easy but so far can't get the alternator to kick in. Someone suggested a smaller pulley but I'm currently running a add on power steering pump from the same pulley. A smaller pulley would most likely mean doing away with power steering or getting a flow divider so the lift pump can serve power the lift and PS. Any ideas about the alternator or converting the power steering to run from the lift pump would be appreciated.

44 Masseys were originally 6 volt positive ground.
When the tractor was converted to 12 volts, it may have not been converted to negative ground. The alternator has to be negative ground to work at all. To convert change the cables on the battery (obviously). Change the wire going from the distributor to the coil so it is on the "-" side of the coil. Then change all of the wires on the amp guage from "+" to "-" and vice versa. To make it read correctly.

Bob, what happens if you don't install the diode or idiot light?

Use a standard 3-wire Delco alternator, connected as shown:

If you wish, you can use an "idiot light" with a #194 bulb (or equivalent) as a DIRECT SUBSTITUTE for the diode.

This system will "excite" and charge at low RPM's, just like the system in your car or pickup. NO special pulleys needed, and the standard alternator is likely CHEAPER than a (goofy) "one-wire" unit.

I found the problem to be the pulley size and that the 44 turns at a slow RPM. I currently am getting higher rpm by moving the carb rod. It only takes a few seconds to get the altenator going. Thanks
