I just purchased a 65 diesel at auction and find a couple of problems. Mainly, the PTO won't hook up (grinds) with the engine running. I read a previous post from Jack in NB and Don Hayden about clutch adjustments to check. The free travel is about right. I'm not sure about doing the clearance adjustment through the inspection hole under the flywheel housing because this thing also tends to 'hang' in gear as if the clutch plate isn't releasing fully and may be adjusted too tight now (did I correctly understand what this adjustment will do?). Given that it seems the clutch is already too tight, should I attempt the clearance adjustment or should I write this tractor off as a lost cause purchased in a moment of weakness. It's only in fair shape and not knowing anything about this model in general I hate to sink a lot of money in it if it's prone to problems. I'd rather just cut my losses early and write it up to experience.

Thanks in advance for help and suggestions.

Bob

Just wanted to say thanks for the help and information both here and by email. Hopefully I'll get a chance this weekend to do some adjustments and see where I am.

I'm glad to hear it starts in cold weather. That was one thing that has already impressed me is that it starts immediately whether it's set for 2 minutes or 2 weeks. I was also glad to hear they're a good basic work tractor - right now lots of things are held together with wire, and the power steering pump is completely gone with a piece of plywood over the mounting hole in the block (been afraid to look further on what that's all about) but if I give this thing some much needed attention it may turn out after all. It'll keep me out of trouble this winter.

so - thanks to everyone for the input - I feel better about investing some time and effort now.

Bob

Bob,
I have a 65 diesel and am very pleased with it I purchased it about two years ago. Other then the normal wear and tear it is very dependable and starts easily in cold weather. I agree with the other guy purchse the manuals, I did and they have been very helpful.

Don't give up on her just yet. A good investment would be for an I&T manual, which is helpful for almost every repair for that tractor. If your PTO clutch is bad, you should be able to replace it in the $750 range or less. The 65 is in my opinion the best tractor on the market today based on price and durability. David.
