I have a Massey 135 deisel 3cyclinder perkins. The motor has been completely overhauled. During the process of putting it back together the motor came off engine stand causing the cam shaft to come about 4-6 inches out of the motor block. We worked it back in and we need to know how to set the timing and if the cam shaft coming out will effect anything.

Hi, even if you think it is correct you will need to reset the timing to be sure. Remove the large center gear and locate the dots around the outside front face. Do the same with the camshaft, pump and crank gears. Crank is at the keyway No 1 TDC. Align the dots on the above facing the centre of the large gear. Allow for the helical cutting of the teeth as you fit the large gear. You MUST have one dot or mark(crank) between two when finally fitted.

Hi Chad,
It sounds like you are turning the engine the wrong way. Looking at the front of the engine it the crank pulley must be turned clockwise.
If your direction is correct you will need to recheck the timing. You can wind it back to the start point but it is usually quicker to remove the central gear. No 1 piston should be at TDC with the key on the crank on top.
