I am have a difficult time getting my 135 back in time, this is a 135 special with the plug in the housing, removed plug to view timming marks, what should the timming be to start tractor? I have tried with # 1 cylinder at the top aligning distributor rotor accordingly but all I get is backfiring. all Help Appreciated.

You have to remember that the four stroke engine fires once every two revolutions of the crankshaft. So the piston is at TDC twice, once at the top of the compression stroke and once at the top of the exhaust stroke. So you need to get #1 on the top of the compression stroke to do your timing. To do this, pull the #1 plug out, put your thumb over the spark plug hole, and crank the engine over til you feel pressure on your thumb. You're now on the compression stroke( the exhaust valve is open on the exhaust stroke so there's not much pressure). When you feel this stop using the starter to turn the engine over and use the crankshafy nut and watch the timing window and set it to the timing mark. Then, remove the distributor cap and make sure that your rotor is pointing at the terminal for the #1 plug wire. If it is, put the rotor and cap back on, loosen the distributor hold down bolt. Put a paper clip or bent wire in the #1 plug wire, turn on the ignition and holding the the wire near a good ground, rotate the distributor back and forth til you hear the snap of the plug firing. That's the timing point. You may have to do it several times to get it right but when you do, carefully tighten down the distributor and you'll be statically timed. Put the plug back in and hook the wire up and fire it up. Check it with a timing light and also rev it to see that the spark advance mechanism is working.
Also make sure that you have the correct firing order. Hope this helps you.
