I have a massey 65 diesel. the three point lift has some problems. First of all when it lifts it shakes up and down. If something is a little heavy it lifts very little and shakes a lot. When I turn the tractor off itdrops the implement. Also I do not know if it is supposed to have downward pressure , like to sink a plow, but mine does not. The implements will only sink if i put somethig heavy on them. If anyone has an idea please let me hear it. Thanks

Hello there.

1. The shaking lift comes from stuck valves on probably more than one of the 4 pistons in the hydraulic pump. Since you say it shakes a lot, I will assume only 1, or maximum 2 pistons is actually pumping. So, out with the pump, and free the valves, or get a valve repair kit or at least gasket kit. The cause for this problem is most likely old oil with water in, so there is some rust and greasy oil.

2. To operate your hydraulics properly you need a proper operators manual. They are easily found. But, just to help you a little out, for raising and lowering a non-earth digging implement, like a rake or a shovel, put the shortest lever, the one closest to the rear wheel all the way down, and then you use the lever closest to the seat, the one with a ball on top. Down and the implement should lower, and up and the implement should raise. If you try an earth digging implement you can use the same setup to just find out if the implement will dig itself down into the soil when you drive forward. There is as the others mention no pushing down in the hydraulics. Just the weight of the implement and the forward motion will dig the implement down into the soil.

3. Oil to use. You must never use a plain hydraulic oil for this tractor. There is only one oil in the transmission and centerhousing. This means the same oil is used for differential, hydraulics and all other gears.
There is tractor oils for this, made for this kind of purpose. Or, you can find a GL 1 gear oil, SAE 80 or 90. Or, you can use plain multigrade engine oil, SAE 15W-40 or similar. Works fine.
What you have to count for is that sooner or later the oil gets dirty and suck water.
And you will need to replace it.

I hope this helps.

Bill

Thanks. How do i know if the draft is on or off? Do yall think it might be the pump? What kind of oil should it use? Is regular hydraulic oil okay?

Make sure the draft control is not on. If the draft position control is on the plow will be held up and will not go into the ground correctly. The 65 lift does not have down preasure. The lift will fall when you turn the tractor off, at least the two I have will. Check the level of the fluid to be sure it is not low and causing the shaking.

We had one back in the 40s that did that when we did not put in the recommended oil in system .Your implements such as a plow or cultivator should have a natural suck as to go deeper and the hydraulics hold the implements from going deeper giving the tractor more traction.Thats what the 3pt ferguson system was all about. You may need new points that give that suck again like shares or sweeps or chisels. They can often be sharpened or built up by welding.Weighting helps sometimes when discing.
