clacking MF135 8 speed

When I idle, no 'clacking' sound in the tranny.
When I engage the gears (any) with clutch in, no clacking.
When I accelerate the tractor in any gear under load or idle up hill (load), no clacking.
When I decelerate or go down hill in gear (tractor being held back), tranny makes a loud continuous 'clacking' sound.
I assume this is 'gear lash'....whatever that means...

What does it mean? Can I ignore (it is annoying at least)? Or must I split the tractor and take a peek? What would I be 'peeking' for?

Thanks for your help?

Does the sound start and/or stop with the 3-point POSITION CONTROL lever in the "constant pumping" position. (all the way up) The pressure relief valve on main hydraulic pump "rattles" constantly in the up position. Try lowering the position control and see if the noise goes away. It's perfectly normal. Almost every 135, 150 and 165 I've ever been around does this.

No. It is not the pump. It is pretty clearly in the transmission.
I have been thinking earlier that the sound was due to a chipped tooth, but that seems unlikely since it doesn't do it all the time.
Or maybe I am mistaken about that thinking.

I've had several people willing to bet me the pump noise was comming from THE ENGINE... It's hard to tell where it's coming from.

Possible you have a bad gear or a bad tranny bearing. That would be tough to explain why it only does it intermittantly though.

I have experience the..what I would characterize..as a 'hammering' noise of the hydraulic pump. It may be something other though...

Anyone else have a suggested regime to test various possibilities? I appreciate your help, all.

We had that once on a 35 6 speed. Turned out to be a loose pinion lock nut.

You should be able to check it by removing either side cover by your heels.

I think I'd remove the one with the PTO shift lever - unless you have a shop manual - because there is only one lever connection to disengage and replace.

The dipstick side has a couple of linkage connections related to the 3-point lift that have to be precisely reconnected, as I recall.

You will likely have to drain a couple of gallons of oil from the transmission, or put the rear wheel up on a 6" block to run the transmission oil to the other side. Be sure to block the tractor securely from rolling if you do that!

Thanks, I'll look into that.
When you say it was loose, how is it afixed and could you repair it through the same openings, or did you have to split the tractor?
