Can anyone help me. I recently purchased an
1969 MF-165 with a 4 cylinder Gas engine.
I can't find anything on the engine to tell me if it is an Perkins or Continential.
If sitting on Tractor seat, muffler goes vertical on right side, Alternator is on left.
Does anyone know?-please help!

My 165 has a gas engine with intake/exhaust manifolds both on the right. This sounds like it is a Continental, according to a previous post. The problem is that the I&T Service Manual shows a "flywheel timing window" for the Continental which I cannot locate on my engine. It seems to me (from the photo) to be at the left rear of the block. No such item on mine, and I badly need to adjust the timing so it will run reliably, without a lot of popping and banging since I put new points, plugs and wires in.

Both engines have the exhaust on the right. The Continental has vertical "tubes" on each side of the spark plugs that the push rods go though.

My I&T manual says the Continental G-176 and the Perkins AG4.212 were used in the MF-165. Says Continental was used only on early tractors.

Digging deeper, I see the governor is on the right side of the 4 cylinder Perkins and is gear driven. On the Continental the governor is mounted on the crankshaft.

The Perkins has a Lancaster balancer below the crankshaft which helps make it a tall engine.

The Perkins in the 165 has timing marks on the crankshaft pulley, the other engines don't.

Intake and exhaust are on the right side of the Continental engines.

It looks like the Perkins has intake and exhaust manifolds on opposite sides.

Any casting numbers should start with G176 for the Continental and AD4 for the Perkins. There should be tags on the engines. Its toward the left rear of the engine on my Continental Z145 on my gas MF-135.
