Hi guys I appreciate your response.
I have a friend that has a MF 35 that he would like to sell. He says it is an AG model that has a lever for more power... Whatever that means. The motor hasn"t run in three years, He said it started to smoke a lot and thought it was a headgasket, he parked it and was never able to get it started again He had the injection pump, injectors, starter rebuilt. The motor would still turn over, but not start.

He proceeded to try and pull the head to replace the HG and couldn"t get the head off so he left it... Now after sitting I can"t get the motor to turn over, even pulling in gear. I think one of the cylinders is at TDC and maybe some moisture rusted it in place...

Should I mess with it?? What would it be worth as it sits?? Paint is old, but ok minor surface rust, tranny shifts fine...

Sorry so long.. Thanks

Quote"Depends on what you're willing to invest, as far as time and money. A repair like what you're describing can get pricey. But, the MF35 was one of the best tractors ever produced. Personally, I'll take just about anything for the right price. I like a challenge. Maybe you'll get lucky, and he'll give it to you. Or, pick it up cheap. For me, less than 1,000 sounds about right, depending on tire condition and tin work. If the multi-power is shot, you can swap out a regular trans and bellhousing, all readily availible. But, be prepared for a can of worms. Few things in life are as simple as they seem."
Time is not a big deal, have a newer midsized John Deere that I can use when needbe. Money is a bigger deal.. Isn't it always?? :)

Can somebody explain to me the multi power?? Not exactly sure how it works... If I went through and rebuilt the engine and then had to go and purchase a new trans, I don't like that Idea at all...

Another Q: Where is the serial number located on these tractors? I was trying to figure out costs of a complete engine overhaul. Slip tractor new mains, pistons, pins, sleeves, etc... just to see costs before I was to crack it open. Anybody venture a guess at costs for this?

When I had hime look he came up with these #:

"Here are the numbers on the engine. I have laid them out like they are on the block.

1885954 C (this is a stenciled number) HB (stenciled)

These are cast into the block:

K25 i (?)

C 57111280

Maybe one of these is what your looking for."

Tins are all in decent shape. All need paint, but surface rust is very minimal and no dents whatsoever...

Thanks Again Guys I appreciate the responses

If he had the injection pump rebuilt, the starter rebuilt, and the injectors rebuilt, then I would buy the tractor. Those 3 things alone would equal your purchase price, and in a worst case, you could easily part out. Tom

Got it's twin sitting in my shed. Sounded so much like mine I snuck a peek to make sure it was still there!!! (joking). I gave $800 plus an old snowblower for mine. Spring is here, time to get the wrenches out. 35 diesel with multi-power is interesting. Great option when it works, but an expensive fix. 152 Perkins is a great engine. Watch this space, I'll probably be asking for help soon, gotta pull the head to see what the insides look like.

You failed to mention the price, but at under a grand, it is definitely worth it.

Course, I have about double in my project as was planned, and 1.5 times what it would be worth when done. So who am I to judge?

Your cash/call, but I'd do it.

Aaron

B:

It sounds like a parts tractor to me. Maybe he will let you haul it away without charge.

The "lever for more power" is probably a Multi Power control. Many of these no longer work and parts to repair them are hard to find.

How many cylinders does it have?

The Perkins diesel has three cylinders. Parts for these are readily available and reasonably priced. It is a good engine.

The Standard Motors engine has four cylinders. Parts for these are hard to find and expensive.

Sounds like a major project.

Hmmmm Thanks for the responses... What would a rebuild kit cost for the engine, worst case senario well assuming no cracks in head or block? main barings, pistons, sleeves, etc... Have a new head gasket set and that's about it...

Would come with a 6ft mower and a 5ft box blade...

On this site, under the Tractor Parts section, they list a basic in-frame kit for about 250.00. Also, check at your local Massey Ferguson dealer. They can still get a lot of parts for these older tractors.
