Just a comment about transmission / hydralic oil in older model masseys. Stay with the original manufacture recomendations for Mineral oil, sae90,or 80w90. Modern day perma-tran and hydralic oils are designed to hold water and carry through a filter, this can make for some thick creamy mess, with poor lift responce in cold weather with out filtering. Straight weight oils were ment to separate the water from oil so as to be drained off frequently from the bottom of the pan. Learned this the hard way when it got below zero and the trany froze in my 65. The condensation from the open transmission case created a thick cream with perma tran I put in earlier. Took a long time to thaw and separate, not to mention the expense. Replaced with SAE90 and have had no problems through two winters since.

In a what? On a vintage MF, it is beside the shifter. The plug should take a 1 1/16 inch wrench. It should be about 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter. Add slow cause it won't show on the stick for a while. The next morning it will be running out of the dipstick hole. Hope this helps,

Aaron

I should add that some folks will flush out the tranny with diesel. Pour it in and run the tractor with the rear wheels elevated or take a short drive under no load. Drain this out and add your 8 gallons.

I hope someone else jumps in cause I am sure there are points I have missed. Good Luck,

Aaron

Look for a large hex headed plug to the left of the 1-2-3-R shifter, on top of the tranny. If seated, it is right beside your left knee.

Here is a pic from my disassembly phase. It points out the oil plug.

I found the fill hole on the transmission, i did not think it was it because I thought it just filled the transmission. what does that fill hole fill and what type of fluid should I use?
Thank You so much for your help.

That fill plug does both- The transmission and hydraulics are one common reservoir. The dipstick, if you haven't found it yet, should be on the right side by your heel. If it shows that it's about 1/2" low, on both our 165 and 285 that's about 1 gallon. Should be pretty similar for yours as well.

The modern day oil is MF Perma-Tran III. You can use any trans/hydraulic oil that meets the Massey specs, although I can't say what those are.

If you don't know when the last time the oil was drained or it's a new to you tractor, I'd recomend draining and re-filling it. There are 2 drain plugs that you have to pull out to drain it all. Have 2 5 gallon pails on hand because it should hold right around 8 gallons.

There is a wire mesh screen inside, to get to it you remove the PTO shifter plate by your left heel. That screen is the only filter in the system, so if the chunks of metal are too big from grinding gears and such, it really should be flushed out as Aaron said with diesel fuel and then refilled after it drains all night. The filter is something that can be removed, rinsed out, and then put back in. There should be a safety wire holding the bolt that holds it in place, you have to replace that wire as well.

Thanks Donovan.

My 59 MF65 has a early pump that does not have a strainer. So if it is not immediatly apparent, you may not have one. Just thought I'd throw that in.
