Hey fellows, is there anybody that can tell me if there is a clutch adjustment on the MF 231 I just bought? I have a two stage clutch, first stage I have to ingage and leave it for a couple of seconds to avoid a little gear grinding, how ever it does stop the tractor fine and the tractor pulls good. second stage I almost have to stand up out of seat to engage to stop all power. I feel like I've been at the gym working my left leg out after doing some mowing.

Hi,
A little grinding is normal. The fact that you have found that by waiting a couple of seconds is good as you will cause less wear in the box by giving it a little time and gently easing it in rather than trying to 'crash' it in.
As to standing on the pedal, I think that the internal adjustment is out. Difficult to say why at the moment but I think that you are compressing the Belleville (Dished) spring to its maximum before the plate is released. To start, remove the plate underneath the clutch housing. Using a screwdriver and with a torch or inspection lamp turn the flywheel until an adjusting bolt comes into view. There should be clearance of .088" here (approximately the thickness of two hand hacksaw blades with the teeth removed) so that the two stages are clearly defined. I think you will find that the clearance will far greater than this. Your pedal travel is not enough to push the PTO pressure plate back far enough to release it.
Let me know what you find and we'll go through the adjustment procedure.
Cheers
DavidP

I just had my 135 clutch replaced - - the mechanic said the new clutch is much harder to completely disengage - he thought the clutch springs were made stronger now. Anyway my PTO will never slip again!

Hello,
Your clutch might have been assembled wrongly. If you have red springs you should only have a total of SIX fitted. NINE for a 165 and TWELVE for a MF 185/188.
Remove the inspection plate from underneath and count the springs. IF you have more than 6 go back to your mechanic and tell him that the wrong number have been fitted.
Some years ago instead of having all the nice colours MF standardized the springs and varied the number fitted for each size of tractor.
I'm sure that you don't want a left leg that looks like Popeye's!!!
Cheers

When I was young, I could not push the brake and the clutch at the same time without raising clear out of the seat. Not sure why your clutch is so stiff. Maybe drop the inspection cover and check it out.

It sounds like your first stage is working just like it should. The gear grinding is normal. That transmission is not a syncromesh. Adjustment might improve the second stage.

Sounds like a normal clutch to me. Blip the throttle up and drop it down suddenly to aid shifting.
