Hello. My neighbor has a Massey 444 Diesel he wants to sell for $1500. I have ran this tractor alot over the years and it is an all around good machine. It has no major issues, and with a hot battery, starts easily. The main thing that dont work is the lever that stops the tractor to keep the PTO spinning (massey's old version of a live PTO maybe?) This tractor has a 3 point, manual steering. It is very functional. Is this a reasonable buy for this machine? I plan to use it for a workhorse. Is there any traits about these to watch out for? How hard is it to get parts for these? Thanks for the help!

Strictly my opinion,1500$ is a steal! If you know the tractor is a sound unit,as you say you have used it plenty. Not many "parts" tractors out there though, as Massey only built about 7000 triple 4s.PTO clutch likely just needs adjusting to make tractor stop when you pull it in.My experience with this clutch is if you use it alot it will tend to slip when tractor is hot and under a pulling load. Also NEVER use this clutch to re-engage ground speed travel, push the foot clutch in,let the pto clutch out, then let the foot clutch out.Thats how they should be used.Engine parts can be hard to find, but stuff is still out there, just have to look harder! If the tractor`s as good as you say,go for it!Wished I was that lucky, gave a 1000$ for one that was beat to death but still ran ,with a cracked head.
Just not many left to find.Hope this helps and wasn`t to much babble, Good Luck!
