do you know if it's a Perkins or Continental? The perkins are a little bit newer, but that doesn't mean the continentals are junk. I thik you paid a fair price, but without a picture i can't say for sure. We've got a 165 w/ continental engine in it, and its a good tractor. Got it under a loader so it sees it's fair share of abuse too. Check out the 2 stage clutch for the pto engagement (assuming it has a 2 stage clutch Live PTO and not hydraulic Independant PTO) The tractor should stop with the clutch 1/2 way down, and you should feel a bit of a spot in the middle too where just the motion stops. All the way down, the pto should stop, and shouldn't grind while engaging it. Multi-power is a great thing to have, but can be expensive to fix. Should give a hard jerk when engaged to high while in motion. Don't worry, you're not gonna damage anything by engaging it in motion either, that's what it's made for. Steering gets worn out and can get really sloppy. There are several points that coule be at fault here too, such as tie rod ends, bushings in the spindles/axel pivot, and some other things behind the grill. Brakes should be strong too. They can be a real bear to change and if you're shop isn't equipped with an engine hoist or over head crane, you're best off having a dealer do them. Look under the belly for a cotter pin to be hangint out. A little oil isn't a big deal, but if it's running out then it'll have to be split and fixed. Hope this helps, Big Dean has a massey checklist on his website too. Donovan from Wisconsin
