How do you remove the shifter?
I think the shifter has come out of the fork. I think if I remove the shifter I can get it out of gear and replace or weld up the ball on the shifter

Hi, If you are stuck in second gear for example you can using a large screwdriver or better still a piece of 1/2" round bar with a gentle benb similar to an umbrella handle slide the selector back into neutral. You may have wear on the end of the gear-lever but the chances are that you will have wear also in the gear-lever pivot hole and on the pin. The pin can be replaced if you can punch it out. This will not allow you to remove the gearlever. It has to be taken out from underneath.
You can reduce the chances of this happening again by adopting a 'square' gear change; eg FIRST, into neutral, then across and into whichever gear you choose rather than a 'diagonal' change. Pushing down gently on the gearlever will also help.
Cheers
