MF35 Generator Oil ?

I recently purchased my first tractor. I bought a 1962 MF35 with a MF102 loader. Hopefully ya'll are full of good info on these, so here goes.
The belt that drives the generator (the only belt) seemed to be loose and squeaked on occasion so I tightend it. The squeak went away but now I can hear a faint grinding sound coming from the generator. There is a small spring loaded flap on the top of the generator that looks like a spot to add oil. Should I be oiling the generator?
Also, the power steering seems to be weak. Is this being caused by the heavy duty loader, or do you think my power steering pump is just not working? How can I verify if it's working properly and just overloaded? THanks in advance.

Chief,
I would keep that belt as loose as possible and still keep it in the groves. The bearing at the back of the generator is a sleeve and will not take the strain of a tight belt. You wear that bearing out, the generator shaft gets into the housing and you just bought a new generator. If its a tach driven generator it will be very expensive. It's not necessary for the belt to be so tight.

Speaking from experience, I bought that lesson

A few drops of engine oil will do in the oil cup. Don't know what your spec calls for but I don't think the SAE weight is all that critical.Do it every 25 hrs or whatever your owners manual calls for. If your generator continues to make noise, it maybe time for new bearings/bushings.
I would susupect that your power steering problem is due to your HD loader. The loaders used on these early machines were not very heavy.
