I am posting this for a friend of mine and was hoping you guys could help us out. We were moving some 20 ft 12 inch I beams with his 75 model 255 Massey ( it has a bucket) the other day and has he went to unload he turned the steering wheel without the tractor moveing we heard a big pop and after that no steering.
There is a flat peice of metal underneath that attaches to the steering arms the flat metal is apparently attacched to a rod that goes up and connects to the steering jack. When you turn the steering wheel the jack will move but not the flat metal peice on the bottom. you can also hear a poppong noise when you try to steer. I feel he has broke the rod or pin that connects the flat bar to the jack or could there be a shear pin that attaches them?

He doesn't have a manual and any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the shaft is not dropped down out of the casting or the flat plate on the bottom has not broke the weld. Then the arm David P has told you about behind the grille has probably cracked. The original arm that came on them from the factory was made to just slide over the shaft and did not fit really tight when the steering was over loaded it would crack. Those the replacement arm is split with a bolt to clamp it tight onto the shaft. If a picture of what I am talking about would help email.

Hi,
We don't have a 255 model in the UK but from your description it sounds similar to the one fitted to many UK MFs.
Does yours have the cylinder mounted in front of but almost across the radiator and the rod anchored to the axle casting? The other end of the cylinder is attached to an arm. The main shaft goes down through the casting to another arm to which the steering rods are attached. There are two possibilities for the failure;
The splines between the underside arm and shaft have stripped or more likely the lower arm of the two on the top of the shaft has broken and is turning on the shaft when you turn the steering wheel.
