I have a small piece of land and I need a tractor larger than a garden tractor. I have a 900 foot gravel drive that I need to maintain in summer and plow snow in winter. I had the use of an 8N untill recently and now I need a tractor of my own I am currently looking at a 1972 Massey Ferguson MF 175 DW with 2726 hours on it and a frontloader. The sheet metal loooks good. I have just seen it in a photo. Does anyone have expirence with this tractor? What should I watch out for? Will it serve my needs for light grading snow plowing and maybe some mowing? Thanks in advance for your help and input.

I still have one and my problem was loose steering. You can cut and bale all day on a tank of fuel. Very easy to work on.

Bob,

The tractor you are considering can definitely fill the role you have. Keep in mind, a 175 is a pretty big tractor for light chores. Although the diesel version is very fuel efficient, it will still burn some fuel. Overall, I think the 175 is a great tractor if it"s diesel (I personally wouldn"t own a gas tractor). Big Dean, who submits to this forum has a great website that outlines what to look out for when buying. The usual things, oil leaks, clutch, smoking excessively, MultiPower operation should be watched for.

My Dad bought our 175 new in 1967 (maybe '68 or '69). It has been a great tractor, done A LOT of hard work.

It has 6500 hrs on it, never had engine work (but needs it now because oil is leaking down the valve stems) and is on its third clutch (my Dad used to plow 300 acres a year with that tractor).

The biggest problem we have had is keeping the steering tight. Everything in the steering seems to wear a lot and the cylinder / actuator needs regular adjustment.

Our 175 is a great machine,

JP.
