Does anyone have any experience with this tractor? It is four wheel drive and has a diesel engine. I am getting ready to buy one. It has 2600 hours and is a 1986. Looking for information good or bad on it.

Hi Tom, The 220-4 is actually a (Japanese built by
Toyosha)compact 26.48 Nebraska test HP-31 gross
HP. Massey sold these from 1979-85. Weight w/o
fluid in tires or other wts. is 3020 lbs. These
engines are 2 cyl,90.3 cu.in. I don't believe any
of these had live PTO. Chuck

Thanks for your reply. This tractor is a 2 cy. diesel. There are no leaks that I can find. The front end is tight. It has a 4 speed high and low gear box and PTO is activated with a lever behind the driver seat. It was used to brush hog and light plowing. That is what we plan to use it for. Do you see any problems with this?
Thanks!

Hi, got the ID wrong on that one!!!
Anyway, small 4WD tractors give little trouble if treated within the confines of what they are able to do. The only problems of any consequence that we have had with this type of 4WD is damaged front hubs usually where a bearing has collapsed and wrecked the gears. Check the front wheel hub for any play by jacking off the ground if you can.

Hi,
I believe this tractor may be similar to the UK's 250 4WD. Does it have a 3 cylinder engine, spacer between the gearbox and rear casing, 8 speed transmission and oil immersed brakes?
If so, the tractor is basically good. Starting is not as good as the 135 for example due to the fact that the pump has been tweaked to give the extra 2 HP to help with the 4WD. I look after two working on a beach locally for launching boats.
The only problems of any consequence other than the normal things are fairly rapid wear in the front axle pivot pins and bushes, prop shaft wear and UJ wear in the axle hubs. Much of this may be due to the operating conditions. Look also for any signs of oil coming from the outer hub seals on the rear wheels. To replace these will require the use of a normally dealer only hydraulic puller.
Cheers
