JB Weld Will It Fill Dents On Hydr Rod?

I noticed my 3PH ram cylinder rod has 2
small dents from someone who probably hit it with
a vise grip or similar tool. I took a file and
carefully passed it over the dents in case there
were any high spots. There doesn't seem to be any
leakage so far but i'm concerned about "O" ring
seal wear at that point. The dents are about 1/32
deep by 3/32 wide closely spaced. I was wondering if JB weld would fill in
the holes without falling out while in the cylinder. Can it withstand hydraulic pressure and
oil submersion and will the smoothness of the metal prevent adequate adhesion.

Thanks, Abe

Thanks for info guys.

The 3PH rod is what I was concerned about right now as i'm almost ready to fire up the old beast after months of overhaul. I have 2, 24in X 2 cylinders that i'm going
to use some day. They are badly dented because
the guy that had them used the extended rods
as a support for pounding out body work while
they were still mounted on his tractor. I didn't say anything as i paid 10.00, but i have very little patience with bozo's who misuse machinery.

If the marks are not too deep, try smoothing off the rough edges with a honing stone so that the seals will not be torn every time that section of the spear passes the seal. a tiny amount of oil could be carried through the seal in the dent, but that is not really a problem and cheaper than rebuilding and re chroming. Be careful of filling the dents as if the filler material does not stick, it could come out and wreck the seal you are trying to protect. An old bloke taught me that years ago and it does work.
Cheers

I can't say whether or not JB Weld will work or not, I've used it in some applications but never one like you've mentioned. There is a wide range of products from "Devcon" that do all sorts of things, many of them specialized. Perhaps some jobber nearby carries the line, and I know there are lots of different products that they have for very specific applications. Meanwhile, put a posting on the "Tool Talk" section of the discussion forum. Lots of those guys seem to know a lot of cures for this type of stuff.
