I don't see how a timing problem could be intermittent. I know your frustration, though. Some 20 years ago, I was Buildings an Grounds Supervisor for a local public school district. We had a 971 Ford that we used on a 7 foot rotary mower in the summer and on an 8 foot blade in the winter. It did the same thing in hot weather running on the mower, just intermittently cut out. Then would start up again. I had the tank steamed, installed a new sediment bowl, new gas lines, rebuilt the carb, tried running with the fuel cap loose to prevent vacuum in the tank, etc. Nothing made any difference. An older man on my crew decided it was vapor lock. The Superintendent of Schools, who barely knew how to open the hood on his car, agreed. I tried to explain that with a gravity flow fuel system vapor lock is impossible as the weight of the fuel will push any vapor on through. They were unconvinced. Maybe it was vapor in the system somewhere. They were still arguing over it when I quit the job and moved on.
