I have a MH-50 with the 4 cyl gas engine that I bought about two months ago. On occassion while using it, it will just die. I check the gas tank and I always have gas when it dies. The first time it died, I had been working some ground for about an hour. I checked the filter bowl and there was some sediment. I cleaned it out and the bowl filled fine afterwards. I checked to see that fuel was getting to the carb and it was. I'm getting fire in the distributor when I click with a screwdriver. I've replaced the plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotar. The insides of the distributor look new and as I mentioned, I'm getting a good spark there. I don't know anything about setting the timing. I have one of those basic manuals and I'm going to look into setting the timing next. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Brent You didn't say if you replaced the condenser when you replaced the points. If you didn't this is more likely to go bad instead of the coil. I would try the condenser first. DH

Hello Brent It maybe the ignition coil is getting hot and breaking down. Runs good for a while than quits. DH

Thanks. The coil was my next item to replace in the process of elimination. After installing the new distributor cap w/rotary button, plugs and plug wires, it fired right up. However, I do believe my problem with it going dead after it runs hot may be the coil. Any suggestions on a good replacement? By the way, I live in Mount Olive, NC. Which Carolina are you from? Thanks.

Brent I live at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountians in Lowgap, NC which is just out of Mount Airy. Hope you get it fixed as sometimes these problems are hard to find without changing parts which may not be bad. DH

Thanks. I've got it back running, just got to see if it dies again after it gets hot. I've ordered a new coil and electronic ignition kit that I will install if, and probably when, it dies after heating up again. Then we'll see after that. Never been to Lowgap, but I've been in some areas around Mount Airy. Nice country up there. Thanks for the info.

I don't see how a timing problem could be intermittent.

I know your frustration, though. Some 20 years ago, I was Buildings an Grounds Supervisor for a local public school district. We had a 971 Ford that we used on a 7 foot rotary mower in the summer and on an 8 foot blade in the winter. It did the same thing in hot weather running on the mower, just intermittently cut out. Then would start up again. I had the tank steamed, installed a new sediment bowl, new gas lines, rebuilt the carb, tried running with the fuel cap loose to prevent vacuum in the tank, etc. Nothing made any difference.

An older man on my crew decided it was vapor lock. The Superintendent of Schools, who barely knew how to open the hood on his car, agreed. I tried to explain that with a gravity flow fuel system vapor lock is impossible as the weight of the fuel will push any vapor on through. They were unconvinced. Maybe it was vapor in the system somewhere.

They were still arguing over it when I quit the job and moved on.
