MF 65 Starter Solenoid problems…

Hi,

Note: I posted this in the "Tractor" section of this forum and it was suggested I post this here. Hope this is okay...

I have a MF 65 Diesel and the starter’s solenoid has a problem. The copper on the bolt is worn enough (see attached photo) that it doesn’t engage the copper ring to complete the circuit to start the starter motor. Since it will take at least 10 days for my local dealer to get a new one in I was wondering if I could fix it.

Here’s what I propose to do: I’ll face off the copper on the bolt face in a lathe so that it is flat. I’ll then solder a new piece on and face it down to the original size. I was thinking of using a penny but now I’m not too sure they are copper so I’ll get some flat copper stock. Does this sound like a plan to you experts? By the way, is it possible to buy just the bolt?

Anyway…what say ye…

Thanks

Follow up...

I ended up facing the front off and silver soldering a piece of copper on (.060" thickness). The total time to do it was about 8 minutes. Looking at it, I think it will last a long time. So far it has worked first time every time for about 20 starts...

I'll post back when/if it fails so others will know if they want to do the same if they are confronted with the same problem.

Thanks everyone for all of your help, I appreciated it very much!

Mike

Heck, yeah, give it a shot. I fixed a brake light switch in a 1950 GMC with a 44 mag shell casing. Cut off the back, slit down the side, hammered it flat and remade the switch contactor. That was in 1995 and it still works.

Make sure you have an old penny. New ones are copper clad. Turned out that when copper prices went up, a penny had more than a pennies worth of copper in it. Who knew?

I would go ahead and order the solenoid just to have it on hand. They do not look very expensive. BTW, the parts I have ordered from this site have arrived in about 44 hours after the order was placed.

Good Luck, Aaron

If it helps any the Delco starter use on the US built tractors a lot of the GM cars and pickups used that same solenoid through the 1960s, 70s and 80s

Hi, All the solenoid parts under the cap are
orderable seperately. Delco starter 1107512 has
diff pn on some parts than Delco 1107503 or
1108662. We used to stock all these parts but
can't find one left over from the business days.
Seems to me to get going if these good suggestions
don't work for you an auto parts would have a
solenoid or seperates. I am so disappointed in the
level of service from dealers that I hear about.
I can give p/n's if you need. The diff is actually
between the regular diesel(injectors straight up
and down)or the direct injection (injectors at an
angle)Good luck, Chuck

CENTAUR,

Thanks for the advice! If you think it will work okay I'll go for it. Actually I really don't have much of a choice as it's this fix or have that tractor down for 10 days. Matter of fact the "fix" will probably take less time than posting this question. third party image

...and yes, I reversed the bolt and it worked just fine for several years. But, alas, my luck came to an end this morning.

I am glad to see someone fixing.I did this many years ago but I see the contact has been turned 180 degrees before.Pennies are copper and should work well. You could also fill those two worn away spots with solder as I have had good luck and it wears as good or better than copper in some cases. You can also reverse the large disc,Maybe it has been done before.I used acid core solder in most of my electrical repairs.I also kept baking soda in water handy.CENTAUR

Be aware that pennies minted after 1981 are almost 98% ZINC.
