I am getting smoke from the exhaust of my "57 MH50 with continental Z134 engine. Compression is 125/125/125/120 dry and 130/130/130/130 wet. I have loader, hood and fuel tank off now, should I go thru the head and replace guides to help with the smoking? Smoke kinda smells like rich fuel, but carb is good and air intake is clear ( I even disconnected air inlet).
Thanks for any help.

[Jerry/MT,

It smokes most of the time (less at higher r.p.m.'s). Plugs are not sooty, they are black and when I removed valve cover, all was operating properly, yet alot of dark glossy (burnt oil???) on various parts. Rockers and all moving parts were clean. Plugs also had a dark glazed look which led me to the valve guides?? Since the compression test was done and it looks ok, I will then suspect the guides, correct?? I will re-do compression test tomorrow. If I get same results, I need to go thru the head, correct??? Engine oil pressure is in safe range and temp runs good.

I have been doing small engines for many years and got bored so I guess since it is not familiar, I want to take it conservatively. Engines are engines, right (except diesels).

Thank you,

maricopa

Since you say it smokes less at the high rpm's I'd have to go with valve guides or stem seals. I think these Continentals had stem seals also. My Z129 is supposed to have them. The high manifold vacuum that occurs at low rpm part throttle operation usually pulls oil down the intake valve guide. If that's what you find when you pull the head you can replace the seals or either have the guides knurled or replaced. (I think machine shops still do knurling don't they?)

First lets figure out whether it's the valve guides or something else. When do you get the smoke? If it's on deceleration or around idle but not at full power, then it's most likely the valve guides. If it's at full throttle high load, then it's probably your oil control rings.

Your compression is excellent IF you did the compression check on an engine at operating temperature. What color is the smoke/ oil smoke is usually blue.
You say the "smoke kinda smells like rich fuel". Is you fuel mixture set correctly? What do your plugs look like. A plug on an engine with a rich mixture will have a fluffy dry soot deposit on it. Rich exhaust has a blackish appearance. This engine has a Marvel-Schebler carb and it is a pressure balanced design, which menas that the condition of the air filter doesn't change the mixture because the fuel bowl is vented to the carb inlet not to atmosphere. All that happens when the air cleaner is blocked is that you can't make max power because the airflow is resticted, but the mixture is not effected. Is you spark a BIG, FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK? If it's not, you might be setting your mixture to rich beccause you have a weak spark. A weak spark will light a richer mixture.

That's all i can think of. Hope it helps.
