I have the firing oredr of a pony I bought, but I see nothing identifying cyl 1,2,3,4. Do you start from the gas tank 1234 forward or 1234 from the radiator back? With the distributor on the side which cap plug is number 1. Any help would be appreciated.

Generally you start numbering from the front of an engine (fanbelt end) and work backwards. So 1 is at the front, 4 is at the back.

The procedure for identifying output 1 of the distributor is exactly as Dave says. Then you need to know which direction the rotor turns when the engine is running; the next distributor output goes to the next plug in the firing sequence and so on.

I"m copying directly from the Pony Service Manual. (Number 1 plug is closest to the radiator.

To rough time the engine.
1. Remove number one spark plug.
2. Crank engine until number one piston starts up on compression stroke (this can be determined by holding thumb over the spark plug hole) and reaches top dead center. (Compression will start to push thumb out of hole). The exact top center can be obtained by looking in the timing hole. The DC mark should be lined up with the pointer in the housing.

It goes on explaining the installation of the distributer if it is removed. But the bottom line here is when the engine is at DC mark, rotor on distributer should be pointed to number one cylinder.
