To my surprise the shift lever base is not sealed like in a car trans. Cracked shift boots allow water and dust to get in transmission. If your tractor has a 3in circular rim at
the bottom of your shift stick then this would
work. I cut a 8X8in tractor inner tube and put a
1/4in hole in the center. Slide the tube down the
shift rod thru the hole. Stop the slide about
3in from the bottom. Clamp the area around the
hole with 3/4 hose clamp. Clamp the rest of the
rubber around the circular rim with a 3in clamp. It will be a little squished all around the rim due to excess rubber. Have someone hold down
the clamp all around if it wants to slide off
while tightening. Trim off excess rubber. Doesn't look that bad either. I think now probably a car tube would have made a better choice as it isn't has thick and easier to clamp. If after awhile you
get a hole or cracking, just do it again.

Yup, it'd probably work OK, but why not just get a new shift boot? I bought a couple from a fellow in the states and although they weren't exactly like the original (a little too flat looking), they fit nicely. Meanwhile, I was told that a shift boot from a Case 430 or a 530 works almost perfectly. The part number is A57876. Never ordered one or saw one but I was told they work well on the older Massey Harris tractors from the 40's and 50's.

Your right. But here in Ontario the dealers
have the green back itch. Someone from the states is buying up all the old tractors around
here and selling them to the mexicans lessening
the market around here for available parts. The other thing here is that I think now
from the tractor boards I'm into that there are
2 types of antique tractor owner. The restorer
and the homesteader. I'm the later and since I'm more interested
in putting the old timer to work than the way it
looks, I tend to improvise a lot. That's not to
say I wouldn't put a coat of brushed paint on it
though, but I have to watch the wallet. Just to give you and idea how insane things are around here I just called a tractor junk yard for a couple of lift arms which are basically a
piece of mid-carbon steel with 2 swivel ball sockets. The guy wants $150.00 for 1 from an old
1956 international. You could get a re-bore in
1956 for that price. By the way, know anyone in Hayter or Provost?
