Massey 1135 Eating PTO Clutches

I have a Massey 1135, I chabged the PTO clutch in June of this year and everything seem to be running fine. Last week the PTO clutch went again.

The clutch plates look fine, very little if any wear at all. The 52 teeth were gone. The teeth were ground down to nothing. This is the second time this has happened this year.

I have taken the clucth barrel completely apart, checkd all shafts to make sure nothing was bent, checked all the pto gears, bearing and race bearings. I can't find anything wrong in the pto drive line. The pto barrel does not wobble when it's assembeled. None of the shafts are bent and all the bearing and gears look to be in ver good condition and working fine.

The only implements that I have run on this tractor are a New Idea 512 Haybine, An older John Deere Manure spreader and a New Holland 68 baler. I have also checked through to make sure all of these were working properly and shafts turning freely. The New Idea 512 is a completely hydaulic unit that runs off of its own hydraulic pump.

Is anyone out there running into this same issue? It was pointed out to me that the PTO seem to be made much cheaper...thinner? It's either very poor quality parts or I'm overlooking something. Any ideas?

Pretty strong clutches. Sounds like you have had the clutch drum isnspected, make sure no grooves or sharp edges. Is the clutch engaging smoothly and not with a jerk to rip teeth off? Any jerking motion on what the PTO is driving? Probably have already thought these. Let us know if or how solved.

I did inspect the drum and cleaned all the shards from the old clutch out.

The clutch engages very soomthly. No unusual sounds. No sliping. It apears to be a normal running clutch.

I went over my equipment and everything seems to turn over just fine by hand. The only thing I can really think of that might of cause some jerking is the bailer. When the cutter on the bailer cuts some of the heavier hay, I'm sure that has to add a little stress to the pto. The knife apears to be cutting well and seems fairly sharp. I'll sharpen it up a little more just the same. I have broken a few shearbolts on the heavy hay. I'm using a low grade shearbolt, it breaks a little to often, but better than replacing a plunger arm.

This thing deffinately makes me stand back and scratch my head. I was a John Deere mechanic when I was in my 20's, can't say as I ever run across anything like this. Usually if there is something in a tractor tearing clutches, it's rather obviouse what it is when you open the thing up. I ran into this on an old deere once and it was the pto gear missing a tooth.

There are a number of things that could have gone wrong anything from improper shimming on the input shaft to not using the right dowels to set the piston. I've known these clutches to be nothing but bullet proof in my experience when properly rebuilt.

I used the same shims that were on the input shaft when I put this back together. The dowels to set the piston are new and are an exact match to the size of the old dowels.

I couldn't find any wear on the shims. After I put this clutch together the second time, I tried to move the clutch up and down and back and fourth to see if there was anything loose. The was no play whatsoever in any direction.

I took the clutch barrel to the Massey dealer and had one of their mechanics take a look at it to see if there may possibly be a problem there that I was overlooking, and after a couple hours he called and said he could find nothing wrong. I thought that there may be some wear or possibly a little warping.
