Bought one a while back. Can anyone tell me what options were avaliable on them. This one has a two stage clutch, not the long lever on the right side of the platform.Did some have 10 speeds?Learn something new every day or so it seems.

Bubba, we must see a picture of this tractor. Please put one on the Help Identify. Thanks,

Can't tell any difference by looking at it, nor is the model number series any different.Has a 277 engine.Looks exactly like 44 that I have, but there is no doubt that it is a two stage clutch.Bell housing is no different either.Am wondering if it was a prototype or experimental or maybe there was an extra sharp mechanic that figured out how to use another manufacturer's clutch.

Really need to see a picture of this one. The way the 44 Special is built, you cannot have a two stage clutch. It sounds to me like a number switch by the previous owner. When Massey combined with Ferguson, the two stage clutch was the independent PTO on most tractors. If you post them in the "Help Identify" at left of this page, we can all look at it. A good side view and a view of the drive under the gas tank should suffice. Sounds interesting.

Be careful with your terminology. A 2-stage clutch = "Live PTO". The Massey Fergusons with "Independent PTO" have a hydraulic clutch pack inside the rear end housing.

This could be an interesting discussion. The defintion of these two terms is somewhat foggy. In my opinion, Cockshutt had the first independent PTO in that it could be turned on and off with no regard to tractor movement. Oliver followed. You say the two stage clutch does not qualify as independent I suppose because you cannot energize without stopping tractor. I'll buy that. It seems mostly independent because you can shift, stop and go without interupting PTO. I yield to your knowledge.

I agree that the terms "Live" and "Independent" are foggy. I also agree with what you said about Cockshutt and Oliver. A large measure of the confusion comes from the fact that both companies called that feature "Live PTO" back then, but ASAE has defined it as "Indepenent PTO" since then.

It is not the traditional independent PTO clutch lever on the right side of the operator's platform, similar to an M&W clutch.Doesn't look like the plate on the right side of the transmission has ever been taken off (where that original kind of PTO clutch would bolt up).

Its like, engage the PTO/ pulley lever and push the foot clutch pedal part way down and the forward motion stops and the PTO continues to run. Push the pedal all the way down and everything stops.I don't know, maybe it is a clutch from a smaller 40/420/430 John Deere that had a two stage clutch?

Ditto on what Marlowe said about the 2 input shafts. Does this tractor have the usual MH chain coupler on the drive shaft between the bell housing and transmission?

it still will need two shafts one in side the other for a two stage clutch and live PTO just putting a two stage clutch in will not give you live pto every thing in the rear end would have to be changed. what state you in ?

I don't know what it looks like,BUT there was a MF 44B and C with a A6-354 Perkins engine tractor made.We ran across this about 20 years ago while looking up some parts.

I was guessing they had a Massey Ferguson rather than a Massey Harris. I couldn't find anything about a Massey Ferguson 44. But then, I have a Massey Ferguson 25 and it is not listed hardly anywhere either.
