MF35 stumbles under load

I have two problems with my MF35 Utility (gas). The problems only happen when the engine is warm. When I'm mowing the rpm's go up to 2200 or so then the engine cuts out and they drop back to 1500 before the engine kicks back in again. It sounds like someone turned it off and then turned it back on.

Similarly, after the engine is warm when I let out the clutch to get going, the engine often stumbles (but not every time). After a second it kicks in and accelerates fine.

An observation: When the engine tries to die, I do not see the governor linkage move at all.

Where do I start?? The ignition system looks new but I've been pulling mud dauber messes out of various parts of the tractor since I got it last fall.

This turned out to be a blocked air intake. Mud daubers, again, plugged the rubber hose leading to the air cleaner. Cleaned it all out and she runs great now.

Wondering whether there's a problem with the centrifugal advance/retard on the distributor (if your tractor has it). This is speed dependent. Sometimes the springs go.

Normal advice for ignition problems: first check you have a good spark. In this case I'd check with a timing light.

Except for the wide range of engine speeds, I'd say the main jet is running too lean and so the engine won't quite produce the power the load demands and so the governor already has the throttle wide open. Try opening the main jet screw a quarter turn at a time.

It is possible its starving for fuel from a gummed up fuel system or that there's an intermittent connection in the ignition circuit.

My JD 4020 gas ran that way a couple days after I got it home, but there the intermittant was the carbon ignition wire between the coil and the distributor that was open when moved to a certain spot.
