It appears a local dealer will be dropping off a MF 175 diesel, non-Multi power (hope thats the right term), 1 set of remotes, no loader tractor off to try over the week. 6000 plus hours. This will be a stretch finacially, but it"ll also be a big step up from an 800 Ford. I needed something big enough to move round bales, run a 60 hp rated round baler, pull a 10ft disc and 3 bottoms in clay. I also wanted diesel for the economy. The locals tell me this is a fine tractor for my uses. It"s in good apparent shape with good tires. The dealer is an AAAAA+ bunch of guys and I trust them completely. But, these are Deere guys and not completely up on MF.

I"m looking for things I should check and opinions on the tractor. At $5800.00 it seems like a great buy.

The 175 is a good all round workhorse..it should have no trouble in handling the equipment you mention...ploughing is one of the jobs it will be very happy to easily handle...once you have got used to the tractor and find out what gear to use for each operation it should give you a lot of good service. One thing the other guys forgot to mention. You said the tractor has one set of remotes. Do you have a round baler already or are you getting one? If you are getting one then you had better be looking at an electric tie baler. This requires only one set of remotes. The factory hydraulic setup on most MF 165 & 175's that have the live (not independent) PTO setup do not have any provision for power beyond to add another valve. The only way to add another valve is to buy a electric hydraulic splitter or install an aftermarket pump system (neither will be cheap). My .02 worth.

Thanks gents. 3 bottoms is prefered, but 2 is doable. No sign of a loader on the tractor. I'll check what I can. Wish I had an online scan of the owners manual!

Hi,
Does the tractor have power steering? Whether it does or not, have an assistant work the steering wheel back and forth in the play. If not PAS check the condition of the main shaft where it passes through the front axle casting. Wear here will allow the tractor to wander on the road. Check all ball joints and bearings at the bottom of the king pins. Gaps under the top steering arms suggest shot thrust bearings. Check the axle pivot bushes. If it is PAS check all parts of the linkage associated with the ram and its anchorage. There should be movement on the straight slotted screw that has the big nut on it but nowhere else. Any movement in the linkage particularly the adjustable barrel ontop of the ram will reduse the steering assistance. Check the main gear lever by trying to turn it. If it is sloppy this can lead to it jamming in gear. Easily enough rectified but a pain. Check if there is a belly plate fitted under the gearbox and mounting bolt holes around the front casting to see if a loader has been removed recently.
Ensure that hydraulic operation is smooth and that there is no sign of the system 'pulsing' lowering and raising repeatedly with an implement fitted at any selected position.
Check for a clearly defined second stage on the clutch. The PTO should stop on its own with at least 1 inch to go to the footplate. Look for any presence of oil around the outer rear hubs. A special hydraulic puller is required to replace the seals.
General appearance should tell you a lot about what the tractor has done and how it has been maintained.
Cheers

Bret,

They are great tractor in my opinion, I just posted a question earlier about mine. I serves me well, good economy, good power. The other post is right, check out Big Deans web site, lots of good tips. The power steering can be a little bit of a pain to adjust, but follow the directions and get repair, owners, and parts manuals. For the plow, the tractor is kind of light. Fill the tires with liquid and add suitcase weights, it will hold 8. Just my $.02

John

Search and check Big Deans website, he has a good list of things to check for in MF tractors. Note that the older MF tractor hydraulics normally allow the 3-pt links to slowly creep down after the tractor is shut off - this is normal for the older MF. But, the links should not flop down fast after shutting down. $5800 is a decent price if in good condition - you could haggle down some I suspect. Good luck
