I cut three fields of hay Sunday with no issues at all with the pto.

Tuesday I hook up the baler and I get a loud squawking noise coming out of the lower PTO gear housing, right behind the PTO shaft. It sounds very much like a loud dry bearing sound and gets louder with a when the baler is under a load. I would say it squaks about every 3 to 5 seconds.

I did take this all apart when I put the new clutch in and really didn't see anything wrong back there. I obviously overlooked something.Any ideas on what? Part numbers?

Before you ask, I did check the baler out. Hooked it up to another tractor and there was no squawk.

Lots of bearings in that cover. Maybe it did not show itselt on the bench when apart. Could it be that when the bearings get up to operating temp, a little clearance is used up an the bearing makes noise? The constant oil bath may be just enough to keep it cool. Not sure of prices, may want to replace all bearings and mic the diameter of needle bearings and 540/1000 output shaft versus new. Good luck.

I'm thinking you're probably right. I've got the new clutch in and running. All it has to do is get me through the rest of this hay season and I'll tear the back of the tractor down again.

I'm going to go ahead and replace all the bearings although I'm leaning towards the needle bearings that go between the two speed pto shaft. It sort of sounds like they may be working against eachother. To be on the safe side, I'm going to change them all. I really don't care about tearing that apart more than I have to.
