I am going to try to make this as short as possible. I just recently completed the rebuild of the engine in my mf40 ind. prior to rebuiding the tractor i did here an odd grinding noise, like the sound of a ball bearing going bad in the front of the tractor. I never pinpointed the sound, but i assumed that i would find it through the rebuild and would fix it then. Well it would appear as though i did not fix it. The noise was there when i started and i started thinking that maybe it was the waterpump bearing, still not too bad, but there nonetheless, and that i would surely need to address it, but not urgently. Well today i was on the tractor and the noise grew very bad in the matter of 30 sec, although severe damage must have been occuring for sometime before that as the crankpulley was super hot to the touch, and that wouldn't get hot in seconds. Now i am leaning/hoping that the forward hydraulic pump bearing has gone bad. The reason that i say that, is that anyother bearing(alternator, waterpump) would not transmit heat to the crankpulley, and it would seem that heat could travel through the hydraulic shaft. Now that is where i am asking for some help. Is there a bearing for the forward hydraulic pump? If so, do i have to break the forward axle to change it. And also has anyone had experiance with this kind of symptom, at the end the noise changed from a sort of rough sounding dry bearing to an awful grinding noise. After all this work, i really don't relish the idea of removing the front axle again, but then again i would rather do that than open the engine again.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tomorrow i am going to break the coupling to the crankpulley and restart the tractor, hopefully the noise will be gone then and i will know that it is associated with the forward hydraulic pump. Although then i don't know where to go from there. Hopefully someone will have experianced this and could share with me.
