Have a MF 35 that is stuck in reverse. Can anyone help with the best way to get it freed? Also is this common for this tractor or should I be looking at splitting the tractor and re-work the tranny? Also i am very green when it comes to theses tractors. So ant advise or help will be a big help!

TIA,

Keith

You aren't really a MF35 owner until you have unstuck the gearshift a few times.

Everyone's comments so far are correct and helpful. One little wrinkle I have learned is to get as much transmission oil in circulation over the gears as possible. Between attempts I idle the tractor with the hi/low selector in neutral until everything down there is soaking wet.

When the guys say to park on a flat surface, they mean it. Even the slightest downhill pressure on the transmission will make it much harder to unstick it.

after you get it unstuck, in future try shifting with the palm of your hand so you apply a slight down pressure on shift knob. I've heard that pulling up on shifter knob can cause it to get stuck. Guess I'm lucky as I've never had your problem in my MF 135 and 165s over the years. good luck and many others have previously posted on the easy fix for this issue.

This is straight from Big Dean - "Getting the main shift lever unstuck
Pull your filler plug for the transmission look inside you will see a big gear. Find a level spot shut off the tractor. Push the clutch down & put the high low shifter in neutral to relieve any pressure that might be on the gears. With a long screwdriver or a small pry bar pry the big gear forward if it is hung in reverse pry it back if it is hung in first gear. If you happen to go to far it will go in the other gear. If hung in second or third gear you have to pry on the shift fork you can see through the filler hole. if hung in second pry the fork toward the front of the tractor. If hung in third pry the fork toward the back of the tractor. You need to get it in the center. You should be able to feel the detent balls pop in the grooves in the shift rail as you move the gear. Through the years I have probably unstuck at least a 1000 of them this way. It is a common problem on the Massey tractors after they get a little wear on them".
And a little more information to help prevent the problem in the future, more information from Big Dean.
Is there any pressure on the transmission? The tractor should be on level ground or at least, brakes locked so the gear will move freely. You should also move the hi-lo range to neutral. Also, after you get it moving again, Big Dean always suggests applying pressure downward on the shifter knob when changing gears and after mine got stuck a couple more times, I started doing that and it only gets stuck now when my neighbor borrows it and forgets. One other thing, I wouldn't suggest force, but I use a very small pry bar simply because it's handier than a screw driver and has a slight bend that easily slips behind the gear I am prying. I am able to apply steady, firm pressure without using brute force. Hope this helps.

Do a search in the archives because this problem has been dis cussed before. I think you can use a big screw driver and pry a gear through the filler cap. If you left the transmission in gear on a slope, the load on the gear in this condition sometimes makes it difficult to move the shift lever.
