MF40 Hydraulic Questions

I have an MF40 Industrial with MF34 Loader and Davis/Case D-100 backhoe. I finally got this thing running smoothly and had a few questions about the hydraulics:

1.) What type of hydraulic fluid does this tractor take? The stuff that is in it has a light brown/carmel color to it.

2.) My dipstick broke off the silly little chain and fell into the MF34 resevoir. Any tips on how to check the fluid level now? Is there any risk of overfilling it?

3.) Is there a recommended RPM to run the tractor at when using the backhoe? The reason I ask is that my dipper cylinder started spewing fluid pretty bad, and my spool assembly starting leaking too. Didn"t know if maybe hyd. pressure is related to engine speed.

4.) What is the recommended tractor setup for backhoe work? (i.e., front bucket down all the way, emergency brake on, transmission in neutral, etc..). I have the manual shuttle shift fwd/rev lever on the left and a 4 speed gearbox with hi and low settings.

5.) Finally, my front left bucket cylinder leaks pretty bad too. Is this something I can repair myself? Is there anything obvious that could be causing the leaking that I should be looking at first?

This tractor is a tank, and very powerful. I"d like to get to using it more. Thanks for your help in advance!

I'll try to answer some of your questions. First engine speed does not have effect on hydraulic pressure. It does on speed of hydraulics. Faster speed will heat up the oil faster. Hydraulic pressure only goes up as high as is needed to do the work in a system like yours. I would think an oil based hydraulic fluid would work or a universal fluid like MF perma-tran III. The only thing that would happen from over filling is it would overflow out the filler when hot. Fill the reservoir several inches below the filler to allow for expansion when the oil gets hot. Maybe an extendable magnet could be used to retrieve the dipstick? If I recall correctly the transmission needs to be in neutral and the manual shuttle lever needs to be in reverse when using the backhoe. If the manual shuttle isn't it reverse something in the trans. doesn't get proper lubrication. You don't need the emergency brake on as usually most of the weight is off of the rear tires with the stabilizers down. I thought the manual shuttle was only 3 speed plus high and low? Usually the front loader bucket is put on the ground when using the backhoe. The tractor is then supported like a tri-pod for better stability. The D 100 hoe I think is the same one for Case skid steers and is smaller than what the MF hoe for the 40 is. The operating pressure should be about the same. Try to find out what flow rate the valves are rated for. I think the pump on your tractor would be at least 17 gal/min. and possibly up to 23 gal/min. You might be able to repair the cylinders and valves yourself. I say might because I have no idea how mechanical you are. It could be a better idea to take them to a good hydraulic shop. In most cases when cylinders leak it is because the seals in them need to be replaced. Sometimes it is the control valve but not nearly as often. Hope this helps. Dave
