Just went and looked over the tractor it runs out good but needs a water pump the shaft is rite loose. Hoses belts and a good service is all I think it needs. It looks to b as advertised $9500 with the mower.

The mower werks OK but all but one of the disc are rite wobbly on the spindle. Owner has one off but could not git the nut on the end of each disc spindle loose on a few of the others, the nut is rounded off. I spec I can git the nuts off and hopefully all that's needed is new disc/hubs. Still trying to figger out the value. I am sure this tractor is needed to maintain 60 acres of pasture. I would want a big'n if I owned the property. Any idea what its worth he was offered $1000 for the mower if he wanted to sell it that leaves a $8500 tractor.
I am looking at this for a customer who is in the service in Afghanistan right now and just brought a farm and trying to decide if he wan't the tractor also, BTW what problems do you think I will run into on the mower spindles, Thanks

We actually own a 285, and can say it's a VERY good model. The only thing that would concern me is why there are fuel stains down the side. OFCuld be leaking injectors, return lines, or anything else.

The battery cable is run the exact same way on our 285. Maybe it's supposed to go under the raiator, but it isn't on ours and just from personal knowledge of the tractor, I can't say it's a good or easy place to run a cable.

I'm guessing the missing bolt 135 fan is refering to is the one on the upper left of the front panel. Again, based off of experience with that model, I'm surprised the bottom right one on that panel is in. The holes are very easy to strip out on those panels, and more than one has a regular nut behind it, if we can reach it with our fat fingers.

The decals and lights are all still there. That says alot to me. Ours still has working headlights, but the decals are peeling off, and some are entirely missing. It also has the sheild over the transmission between your legs. Ours never had it, and we bought it right from the dealer as a demo model in 82. Ours is a 78.

In our area, a clean one like that, even with a bad water pump, would bring $9500 easy. If the tach doesn't work, you can either replace it or get it fixed. It won't be accurate to the actual hours, but it wouldn't be a big concern to me.

In my honest opinion, without being there to pick it apart but based off the pictures, what you said about the water pump and tach, and a fuss about where the battery cable is routed, $8500 for that tractor is a very good deal.

If we brought ours off the farm right now, with faded and scratched paint, missing and flaking decals, and grease and oil all over it, we could sell it for $9000. Throw in the engine overhaul it had this spring, with papers, $10,500. Paint it, and we have a $12,000 tractor.

Just from what I can see of the unit, there are a few things that I would look at closer. First off, there is indications of diesel fuel near the injector pump on the photo of the left side. If someone tells you its from bleeding the system, they are dead wrong. I've been running a Perkins A4-318 in the MF 1080 since 1978 and only had to bleed the system twice in that time. That was at the fuel filter change many years ago and the injector/filter change 2 years ago. Fuel stains just don't appear. Hours, the "unknown" should make you assume there is 10,000 hours or more. Mr. car salesman can prove otherwise if he believes its lower. The other thing that I would look into is the chains for the 3 point. The right side looks like its been modified with a clevis to hold the chains. It stands out from the factory original chains. Also look at the lower 3 point mount on the axle. I know of 2 that were broken from use of stabilizer bars. To repair, you would need to replace the axle housing. The engines were not the strongest thing in the world, on a 60 acre farm, it should give you many years of service providing you don't over lug the engine. The sleeves do crack between #2 and #3 cylinders. Good luck with the rear ends, hydraulics, and clutch.

The tractor looks pretty clean and straight in the picure but it is hard to say a value without some more info like year or serial number and hours. Why is the owner selling it? It has the power adjust wheels and the tires look good. It also looks like diesel has been spilled or leaked on the engine. This could be from bleeding the fuel system though. Is that a starter cable going from the rad area under the steering lines? It needs to be routed properly what ever it is. It also looks like a bolt is missing on the side cover. The price seems a little high considering it needs a water pump. Will the owner fix it before it's sold? I'm sure you'll get some more opinions. Dave

As far as I'm aware, that is the proper routing for the battery cable. Ours is run the same way, and has been as long as I can ever remember. The side panel is bent out a little bit for the cable to go through.

1980 model, hour"s don"t show up, bou"t new tires the old ones are in the barn, will have to recheck the cable, not sure about the bolt deal. I just figgered it needed a goo clean"n, it had no other leaks ran out good nice and tight and not bent up.

The owner was trying to fix the mower but gave up cuzz he could not get one of the mower disc spindle nuts off. That"s all I know at this time. For the hole story read this link, I just got in the middle of this deal and trying to help one of our service men and wife live their dream. One thing is for sure they will need a tractor and a big"n like this would come in handy. I know this deal could go either way on the price and mite b a tad high. I also consider the fact its always been on the farm and has only been used to mow. most of the farm has been leased out to a farmer that grows beans. Ya know I need to call that guy and run it by him. Thanks much 135 Fan for any help.

The guy selling it sounds like a used car salesman. Of course he doesn't think the price is too high. What condition are the old tires? If they're worn out the tractor has been used for more than mowing. The only reason they should have been changed is if they are very badly weather checked. Obviously he didn't do the best maintenance on the mower so it makes you wonder what maintenace he did on the tractor. That cable might be an example. How come the hours don't show up? I'm not saying it's bad tractor. It may be a great tractor but there are lots of tractors available for sale. Some with a warrantee. Keep in mind it is a 27 year old tractor. Of course there are many MF's still running that are much older than that. My 1965 135 is one of them. For 60 acres you don't really need an 80 HP tractor. It might be a good idea to look around and talk to dealers. If you could pay a mechanic to take a look would be a good idea for piece of mind. You can't always trust what people are telling you. Just ask some of the people on here. Dave
