Massey-Harris Pony gear shift problem

My uncle bought a Massey-Harris Pony tractor new in the early fifties, which has been passed down to me. It is in very good condition, having been kept in the barn since new, the tractor has never spent a night outside or been out in rain or snow when not being worked. My father, a retired mechanic, overhauled the engine in '97, and it runs great. My only problem is once in a while the gear shift pops out of gear and won't go back in. My dad knew what to take apart to fix the problem, but he passed away this spring. I am not nearly as mechaniclly gifted as he was. I remember him saying that a curved washer might be a cure for the ball of the gearshift pulling out as it does. Has anyone ever heard of this problem?
