I have a 243 Massey Ferguson and the tach quit working. I took the cable off, and it was broke off at the opposite end of the gage. I put a new cable on, and the tach still does not work. Any suggestions????

On my 135 I replaced the cable and the tach worked but showed a slower speed than the engine was running. I took the tach in to get tested and the shop said it worked fine. I put it back in and it still showed lower speed than it should. In the process the cable broke again. I ordered a new tach and cable and problem solved. Well almost solved. It shows the correct RPM's but on UK tractors a speedometer is also on the tach. I think it's called a tractormeter. My tractor has multi-power and the multi-power tach was discontinued so I had to go with the standard 6 speed tach which shows the wrong speeds for a multi-power tractor and also only shows 6 speeds instead of 12. Check your new cable. If it's broke, then have the tach checked out. Dave

Hi Carl, The broken cable usually indicates a "froze"tachometer although sometimes could be
corrosion. You should be able to turn the tach
end with your fingers. If it is froze you should
be able to loosen with spray lube and work back
and forth. I'm assuming a 240 or 245-don't have
anything on a 243. Chuck
