Hey, ya'll help a city boy out. Bought a tractor the other day. The stickers on the side say Massey-Ferguson 35, then under that, Deluxe. The plate on the dash (I guess it's called a dash) is gone, the plate on the engine is un-readable except that it is a Continental engine (4 cylinder). The only #s I can make out are stamped on the sides of the transmission. I figure that these are probably some sort of part # rather than serial #s. Anyway the number is 180-402-M1. Above that is "(MHF)". On the front is a plate that says Ferguson. Anywhere else I could possibly find the serial numbers?

Are you the Catfish that works for an airline. If so, give me a call.

ONE OF THE WAYS TO TELL IS THAT ON THE SIDE INSPECTION COVERS AT THE REAR END HOUSING IT SHOULD SAY MHF

Be careful a lot of old TO 35's were painted
red and were passed off as MF 35's.Tags were
removed so you couldn't tell.Several differences
but most city slickers don't know the difference.

Catfish - my educated guess is that you have a 1956 or 1957 Ferguson TO-35. The 1954 and 1955 TO-35s had "HF" on the castings. In 1956 and 1957 they used "M-H-F". I believe they began using the "MF" casting in 1958 but am not absolutely sure about that. If you can find any evidence of original paint colors, they were beige sheet metal and flint metallic gray castings. The tractor SN was on the dash. Often the 35s from these years were repainted red and flint gray to make them appear newer like the later TO-35s and the MF 35. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the fraternity of Ferguson owners and best wishes!

Paul, my 55 has M-H-F on the castings, so it might be a Grey sheetmetal/Green castings tractor, other than that, there are very few differences. Catfish, you might want to make sure that it is indeed a deluxe, Deluxe TO 35's have a double clutch(2 stage) clutch, first stage disengages the transmission, and the second disengages the hyd. pump and pto. Deluxes also have a "Ground Speed" position on the pto shifter.

Evan - my '55 TO-35 has "H-F" on the castings. Apparently the switch in casting marks was made during the production run of 1955. One thing about this restoration business, one never stops learning something new!

My S/N plate also has Massey Harris Ferguson on it. What is the S/N of yout tractor? Must be lower than mine if it only has HF on the castings. I shouldn't say that all the castings on my tractor have M-H-F on them, I think there are a few that just have H-F, but I'll have to check it out.

Hey guys sorry it took so long to respond. I've been kinda of busy during the last month, with the job. Ya'll know how that is, got to have money to put into these tractors and etc. Paul and Evan, to answer some of your questions: Yes my tractor does have the duel clutch and the ground speed on the pto. The plate for the serial # on the dash is gone. That's where I'm at a loss in trying to find the year and the model. Any tell tale signs to be able to distinquish a TO-35 from a MF-35? Thanks...cf

You know I'm thinking like Paul. I believe this tractor is a TO 35. I'm of course basing that mostly on the "MHF" on the side casting. My wife's Uncle sold me the tractor, then went out and bought another one. It's a TO35, with the Standard diesel engine. Other than that, it looks almost identical to the one I have. I still wish there was some telltale sign to make it definite.

Now I have a new problem. I was bush-hogging (being a city slicker not sure bout the correct spelling of that word..LOL..) and ran a stick through the radiator. Took it to the shop today to see if radiator can be repaired. I'm missing the bottm piece the attaches to the bottom of the hood. What's that piece called? I'm going to try to find one at the tractor place, but don't know what to tell them. I'd hate to have to go in and say, "....it's the thingamajig that attaches to the doohicky at the bottom of the hood. Know what I mean? Course being located here in the lovely foothills of North Carolina, I wouldn't be surprised if the parts man said,"You mean this?", and came out with the right piece....LOL...Anyway thanks for the help, and say a prayer for the radiator..Catfish
