MF 165 removing CAV filter housing

This is probably a dumb question but I have to remove the CAV fuel filter housing (not just the glass bowl) because I stripped the bleeder bolt. I have the new piece but cannot get the fuel lines out of the old housing no matter how much I pull. Is it friction or is there a catch/notch/flaring/crimping that occurs when the lines are first put in?

The lines look original to the tractor (MF 165 from late 60s) so I don"t want to pull too hard or I will have a bigger job than i already do!

Thanks, Andrew

There is a little flair on the end of the line then a rubber olive then the compression nut. That rubber olive will get real hard and it is almost impossible to pill it or the line out. I always used an ice pick to dig the rubber olive out with. Once you have enough of the olive removed you will be able to remove the line and what is left of the olive

Hi,
If it is an older tractor then you should have brass olices on the end of each pipe. The can stick in the seating but I have never had any problems freeing them. Slacken the nut and using a grips or similar try and turn the pipe a little back and forth. Alternately remove the nust and apply a little gentle side pressure back and forth. That should do it. Later tractors had an olive which was part of the pipe and used a rubber compression collar.

Thanks for the replies. If and when I do manage to get it out, can I just stick it into the new housing or do I need to flare the end and get a new "olive"?

As for the "gentle pressure" from side to side you mention, I am past that. I didn"t use grips because I didn"t want to damage the fuel line. It really feels like there is a lock on the end of the tube (I suppose it could be the olive?).

I have bought some penetrating oil and will try your suggestions this afternoon!

Thanks again, Andrew
