Hi,
I've posted here only a couple times and am really green at this tractor business. I now have 7 tractors 4 run 3 don't. Last week I picked up a 1936 MH Challenger and the guy stated the engine will let water into the crank case if it sits outside, ?????. When I got the thing home it had water in the oil so I changed it and run it aroung the block about 2 miles. The oil is as clear as you ever want. Still would like to know if anyone has had that problem with the Challenger engine? Thanks,
Charles H

If it is the model with the half round oil pan, and the motor sits down on it, they sometimes leak rainwater around the flange where the motor sits on the pan.

I do not have a Challenger, but I will comment from experience with engines. Head gasket leaks is one possibility. Another is if the motor has what are called wet cylinder sleeves, there are sealing O-rings around the bottom of the sleeves in the block to seal water out of the oil. They can get dried out and cause a leak. The head has to be removed, piston/rods removed, and the sleeves pulled to replace them. An internal crack or sand hole in the block casting is also a possibility, but not likely. First, be sure the water is from the cooling system. Put anti-freeze in the motor so you will know by the color. When "outside" was mentioned, it made me think condensation from weather changes might be putting moisture in the crankcase, and it was thought to come from the cooling system. Here in Indiana when we get warm-ups in winter, the water literally runs off our equipment from condensation, both inside the motors and outside for any machine not in a heated building. Thanks Marty for the reply and info on the sleeves. I will put some anti freeze in the system to see if it goes to the oil. To me there was a lot of water in the system, the color was not as milky as I"ve had with head gaskets going bad. Again Thanks,
Regards,
Charles

The Challenger started right up and run quite a time. The oil is clear, no anti freeze in it. I was able to get ahole of a Challenger manual and it talked a lot about dulited oil from burning the kerosen and water and the shut down causing water to collect and having to drain the water off daily. Agian thanks for all the info.

Regards,
Charles H.
