The throttle control lever on my 65 will not stay wide open. Is there a friction adjustment? I've tried adjusting the cable clamp, but either will not idle up or idles up so much the tractor dies. I have to hold the throttle lever in place while driving or it will slowly worh itself to about half throttle. I only mow with the tractor but I need the faster RPMs.Thank you for any suggestions

Yes there is a friction adjustment. It is on the throttle control lever and just below the dash. You should find a metal disc, two fiber washers ( one on each side of the disc), and two star shaped spring steel washers backing up the fiber washers. It is likely the fiber washers are worn out or completely gone causing some or all of your problem.

Upon inspection you may also find wear on the formed ears of the throttle lever where it goes through the metal disc. If so you need to braze up the ears and file to reshape eliminating as much of the slop as possible.

I have never seen a 65 with a cable as you mentioned a cable clamp?? If it truly has a cable I am guessing someone added that, probably not original.
