I am needing to find out some information. I just bought a MF 275 that has a tag on it Exported by Hitchings of Hereford. The PTO shaft will not stop turning when the tractor is running. I have tried the two positions and it will not stop. Even placing my foot on it will not stop it. If anyone has a suggestion, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Hi,
In the past I have had dealings with Mike Hitchings and found them to be very reasonable. I do not live too far away from their depot in Hereford.
Normally the cause of I assume an independant PTO continuing to turn is wear or failure of the brake pad and/or operation. A warning; You should NEVER try to stop a PTO turning with your foot. Wedge a piece of wood against the drawbar or somewhere convenient but never the foot.
Is the drive OK when you wish to operate an implement? To replace the brake pad it is recommended that the hydraulic cover be removed and split between the rear of the transmission spaced and rear centre casing. It is a difficult job but I have managed to replace pads by only removing the hydraulic cover.
It would be wise to obtain a shop manual and check the IPTO operating pressure before any stripping.
Should your tractor have a two stage clutch please come back and we'll go from there.
