TO-35 making wierd noise

I purchased this tractor a few months ago. It was running good but the person I bought it from didn't know much about the history of the tractor. A couple of weeks ago I gave it a complete turne up (plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, condencer, points) and changed the oil and oil filter. Afterwards it appeared to run a little smoother. However after using it for approx 30 minutes to smooth my driveway, it started making a squeaking noise at low RPM or idle. It appeared to be comming from the front cylinder. I increased the RPM's and the squaking went away and possibly started knocking a little. The knocking wasn't loud at all. but to play it safe I parked it. The next day when I tried to start it, it started squeaking when I cranked it over. So I didn't start it. After talking to several people I tried to start it again. Same thing happened, squeaking when it cranked over but it eventually fired up. The squeaking went away when i increased the RPM's. When i returned it to idle speed it died. The motor appeared to be under a load. When i tried to restart the engine, it wouldn't even crank. It sounds like something is bound up (hopefully not locked up). I can not afford to rebuild the motor at this time. I was thinking of dropping the pan and checking the rod bearings. When I pulled the plug and looked inside the hole i could see the top of the piston. So it is at the top of the cylinder.
Has anyone had this problem before or have any ideas before I tear into the motor? I am not a mechanic by any means. I have worked at a maching shop rebuilding cylinder heads and honning cylinders. So I am fammiliar with some of the problems in that area. Thak you in advance for any help you might be able to give me.

I would like to know what you found wrong with your tractor.

I follow a truck forum in addition to this forum.

I have noticed numerous questions about placing synthetic oil in older or high mileage engines.

Many have said that synthetic oil will start cleaning the deposits out of the engine and they can stop up internal oil ports. Engines seaze up and gaskets start leaking.
If a engine is new and you want to change oil to synthetic, I think it is fine after break in period.

But in older engines you are taking a chance.

Only reason to use synthetic oil: you put lots of hours/miles on vehicle and do not want to take it off line as often for maintenance.
However, you have to change oil to get dirt and moisture out of engine.

I do not know what they used before. I highly doubt they used synthetic... The person I bought it from aquired it when he purchased a house and he knew nothing about the tractor or the history. He had a hard time controling the 3 point so he just got rid of it. I used synthetic thinking that I was putting a higher quality oil in it and it would last longer. Why would using this oil cause problems in an old tractor? As I said I am not a mechanic and all help is appreciated.
Jeff-oh, thanks for the clarification.

another question:

do you have any idea what type oil was in the old tractor before you changed to syth.

I know this will start a fire storm, but I would not recommend changing the type oil you use in one of these old tractors.

maybe a mute issue now: As it seams from you post that something has seized up or scared a cyl. wall.

good luck

The first thing I did was check the oil. And I have re-checked it several times since. It registers in the "safe" zone on the dip stick. I don't understand why this would happen after I changed the oil and filter. At first I was thinking I didn't do something correctly. The oil I drained out wasn't terribly dirty. I used a Fram oil filter and Harvest King sythetic blend 10W-40 oil.

I will try to turn it over by hand. However I do not have a "starting handle". But that sounds like a good place to start before I get into the engine. You mentioned the "BDC" check. What is that?

Thanks for your help

BDC- Bottom Dead Center... i.e at the lowest end of each cylinders stroke.

Hi,
Some general observations;
Have you checked the oil level?
Its possible that one of the big-end bearings has turned in the rod or has just started to 'pick up' on the crank journal.
It is also possible that you have a build up of carbon under one or more of the rings. This can cause the ring to tighten in the bore.
Would suggest that you remove the plugs and if you have a starting handle turn the engine to check for unusual tightness.
The next step would be to remove the sump (Oil pan) and check the big end bearings. It is normal to have a little front to back movement but negligible side to side movement. If all are free remove each cap in turn and with each piston at BDC check that you can push the piston upwards freely a little.
Please let us know what you find.
