My father has a Massey Harris Pony that he believes is a 1948. He has an intermitent problem where the tractor will lock in forward and reverse. He thinks the bearings are shot and is wondering how to repair and / or replace. Are there major problems with this? Curious because I had not identified anything throughout my forum searches. Can you possibly enlighten me on your thoughts on this issue and point me in a direction to help him out? Not sure if he has the service manual or not, but assuming he does not since he asked me to search the WWW. My father has been a mechanic for 60+ years but looking for direction on this one. If anyone can help out it is greatly appreciated.

I appreciate the help, but investigating this further the one rear wheel can be turned and you can feel a gear or something almost drop in. Also if you have keen enough eyes you can look up into the housing and see what looks to may be a snap ring that could be loose?

Could on of the gears have something chipped out of it causing it to lock in forward and / or reverse at times?

In reference to the Service Manual, will it explain how to take this apart to look into the problem? Almost looking for more of a repair manual or some insight on how anyone may approach this.

Service Manual in reply to Brian Englert, 01-17-2008 12:17:01
The Service Manual, as Massey Harris calls it, covers just about all services on the Pony. It could be also called a "repair" manual. What some might call a "service" manual is covered in the Operator's Manual.

The Service Manual covers engine, fuel and air, electrical, power train and brakes, hydraulics, and front axle and steering.

Sounds like it could be a worn shifter thats what mine had been doing. it tried to be in 2 gears at once
I welded up the hole and re-drilled it, and used a new pin.

You should secure a Service manual for the Pony. I covers most service procedures.
